Executive Director’s Letter:
As we move into 2017, I’d like to share all the great things that are happening at the ISC. Since I cannot describe all of our member benefits and events in this short letter, I hope that you will take the time to visit , where you will find a calendar of events, links to past and future programs, member benefits, and upcoming programming. On page 80, you can learn more about last year’s conference in Pittsburgh. This year, our annual event will be held in Kansas City; more details are on page 65.
This issue is dedicated to sculptural free-thinking. The artists featured here are challenging our ideas of what sculpture can be: Tony Cragg pushes our understanding of an object’s physical constitution; Sam Jaffe uses yarn and fabric to give unexpected forms to soft materials; Konstantinos Stamatiou works with throwaway materials such as plastic, Styrofoam, and cut drinking straws; Renee Stout creates metaphorical works steeped in mysticism that materialize the spiritual world; Gabriel Valansi extends the reach of photography into monumental spatial installations; and Iakovos Volkov exploits the power of words and discarded materials in eloquent, cerebral sculptures that give meaning to urban ruins.
