The Art Guys Again and Again

Tacoma, WA

Tacoma Art Museum

The Art Guys are smart guys, indeed. Jack Massing and Michael Galbreth craft extraordinary objects from ordinary origins. The exhibition is very well orchestrated; a blend of two-dimensional studies, small maquettes, and objects affords viewers a glimpse into their imagination, technical facility, and sense of humor. Multiple beer bottles, aspirins, sliced cheese, chewing gum, marbles, pencils, lawn mowers, toothbrushes, and suitcases are deftly arranged into a deceptively engaging look at American
consumer culture. Consistent with the exhibition’s redoubling title, a theme of representation through
repetition is an effective strategy that refers liberally to Duchamp’s readymades as well as to Fluxus,
Pop, Minimalism, and conceptual art… Subscribe to Sculpture Magazine to read this review in full.
