Peripheral Visions: A Conversation with Linda Fleming

In the late afternoon light of the Western Nevada desert, the hard work of sand spiders becomes visible when the sun angle is just low enough to be caught by the glistening dew. This is the world that inspires Linda Fleming, a world apparent only out of the corner of one’s eye. Yet her best-known work exceeds human size and is fabricated from decidedly present materials such as plate and angle steel, timber, and rough-hewn logs. Since the early ’70s, Fleming has been evolving a body of work that strives to express the simultaneous realities found in the space between: between conscious and subconscious, form and matter, science and art, between this world and the one just beyond perception.
