Monika Weiss’s installation Koinan is intended to reverse a legend of the saints both conceptually and in terms of gender. The installation (the title of which alludes to burial and decomposition) consists of an octagonal concrete basin shaped like an early Christian baptismal font. The font, however, is filled with continuously overflowing, used motor oil, recirculated invisibly by a small motor; the oil spills over the rim and cascades over the concrete floor of the installation’s site, a concrete building below street level adjacent to a railroad underpass… See the print version of Sculpture Magazine for the full review.
