Miami Beyond the Fair

Over the last decade, several dozen contemporary art galleries, museum-quality private art collections, and artist studios have established a presence within a geographically discrete urban grid of warehouses and modest residential neighborhoods in Miami. Nearby commercial enterprises such as restaurants, shoe and clothing wholesale businesses, and boat repair shops attest to the pragmatism and flexibility characteristic of almost any vibrant American city, but the steamy weather and uniquely Latin American cultural flourishes remind us that we are in Miami. This section of the city, officially called the Wynwood Arts District, has survived the stumbling national economy largely intact and is again preparing its collective answer to the annual Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) fair week in December, when 250 leading international galleries play host to a cumulative audience of 40,000 paying attendees. …see the entire article in the print version of December’s Sculpture magazine.
