Marek Chlanda’s retrospective exhibition (1978-1999) presents a diverse assortment of drawings and sculptures in which he engages dissimilar materials to produce an idiosyncratic melange of art. The
first decade especially represents an important period for Polish artists. Despite the fact that Poland perhaps enjoyed the most freedom in the visual arts within the formerly Soviet-control led nations, the martial law declared on December 13, 1981, constrained artists’ creative freedom until December 1989 That eight-year period of government scrutiny comprises the formative years of Chlanda’s artistic development.
