Editor’s Letter:
“Through my work,” says Coral Penelope Lambert in an interview with Michaël Amy, “I ask if we can express nature in a way that does not merely illustrate it. The natural world takes one beyond oneself—it invites dreaming because everything within it is interconnected.” Connection could be said to be the bass note repeated throughout this issue, but its overarching sound is one of applause. Lambert, for instance, is the 2022 recipient of the ISC’s Outstanding Educator Award. In an essay this month, Reginald Jackson lauds the winner of the ISC’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award, Barbara Chase-Riboud, who, as an accomplished novelist and poet in addition to being a great visual artist, knows more than a little about connection. Guadalupe Maravilla discusses how his wild and performative mixed-media sculptures link people through healing, while Anne Samat, also interviewed in this issue, talks about how her woven sculptures address love. In addition to applauding those with substantial careers, we also sound a gong for the recipients of the ISC’s Student Awards. The issue is loud with celebration indeed. —Daniel Kunitz, Editor-in-Chief
