Sculptures designed for outdoor festivals face a number of limitations, from the short run of the venue to a wildly mixed audience, mostly unaware of the latest art world trends and often skeptical of art. But never willing to pass up a challenge, the curators of Baltimore’s annual festival of the arts, this year called “Artscape 2000 Minus 1,” commissioned sculpture focusing on houses and martyrs, unlikely subjects for a weekend of music and entertainment in the hot July sun.
