Adventures in Black: Seung-Wook Sim

Seung-Wook Sim belongs to a generation of young Korean artists who have taken advantage of educational opportunities in both South Korea and the United States, where they have stayed after school. Sim has an impeccable academic pedigree: he studied sculpture at the prestigious Hong-Ik University in Seoul, where he received his BFA in 1999 and his MFA in 2005; he received a second MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. Commenting on his move to New York that same year, he says, “Making art in New York has not been easy. It is challenging to process the exciting stimuli of the city. New York may be too accustomed to its role as a world center of contemporary art; still, [it] is attractive to a foreign artist.” …see the entire article in the print version of October’s Sculpture magazine.
