Roxy Paine has won considerable attention from the art world for various bodies of work, including stainless steel tree forms (dendroids); arrangements of psychedelic and poisonous mushrooms, as well as artificially made, weedchoked gardens (replicants); and machines that make drawings, paintings, and sculptures. His sensibility focuses on an aesthetic in which the artificial becomes a reality based on natural forms, but which, in turn, allows itself to be copied or created anew as a cultural artifact. Sometimes the forms are compellingly exact, as in the case of the dendroids and mushroom fields; and some- times the work is outstandingly ersatz, as in the excrement-like, layered forms extruded by Paine’s computer-run machinery.…see the entire article in the print version of October’s Sculpture magazine.
