Kaarina Kaikkonen, one of Finland’s leading artists, first showed her work at Art Basel Miami Beach in a 2004 exhibition curated by Julia P. Herzberg and Carol Damian. And It Was Empty—thousands of used men’s jackets arranged along a wall, somewhat reminiscent of the hanging jackets in Kaikkonen’s boat-shaped installation at the Havana Biennale earlier that year—became one of the highlights in the large warehouse space of Omni Art. The following year, Kaikkonen returned with My Outline, a work that from a distance appeared to be the outline of a large sailing vessel. On closer inspection, the white lines turned out to be made of ordinary toilet paper—a fragile, throw-away material normally outside the realm of art. In 2006, again during Art Basel Miami Beach, Kaikkonen installed Queen of the Night, created out of shoes, at the Bass Museum.
