Athena Tacha seeks out natural wonders: slot canyons in Utah, volcanoes in Hawaii, mudboils in New Zealand, glaciers in Patagonia, and, always it seems, water and the magnificent patterns, forms, and effects it has wrought the world over. In a career spanning over 40 years, the artist has also continually investigated, embraced, juxtaposed, and connected seeming opposites. She has dealt in realms personal and public, scales microscopic and monumental. She has treated nature as unique changing phenomenon and as abstracted form; visual and spatial abstractions as ideas and as frameworks for physical constructions; spatio-temporal rhythm as framed, as frozen forms, and as choreographed. She employs scientific analyses and artistic syntheses, the techniques of the art historian and architect along with those of the artist.
